19 years without Stevie Ray

To complete the summer portion of the "In Step" tour, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble played two shows on August 25 & 26 at Alpine Valley Theatre in East Troy, WI, while on tour with Eric Clapton. For travel to the next venue, the tour manager reserved four helicopters to circumvent congested highway traffic. In very dense fog, the helicopters were clear for lift-off at 12:40 A.M. Just past the lift-off zone was a 300-foot hill. Vaughan's helicopter pilot was unfamiliar with the flight pattern for exiting the area, and did not climb to sufficient altitude immediately after take-off. Vaughan's helicopter veered off to one side and crashed into the hill. According to the findings as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the accident was determined to be inadequate planning by the pilot, and failure to attain sufficient altitude to clear an obstacle. Fog and haze, as well as the rising terrain were listed as contributing factors. All occupants including Vaughan, the pilot and three members of Eric Clapton's travel group were killed on impact. On August 31, 1990, funeral services were held for Vaughan in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. Brother Jimmie, mother Martha, and girlfriend Janna were in attendance. Among the mourners were all three members of ZZ Top, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson Browne. Vaughan was interred at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Oak Cliff, a part of Dallas, Texas.

BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA MEETS FILM NOIR ON ‘SONGS FROM LONELY AVENUE’

Rockabilly guitar-slinger, big band impresario, and all-around cool cat Brian Setzer takes a walk on the dark side with his film noir-inspired new album ‘Songs From Lonely Avenue,’ out October 13th on Surfdog Records.

With a propulsive rhythm, an ominous minor key, wickedly good instrumental solos and the familiar character of the Devil up to his old tricks, opening track “Trouble Train” sets the mood for the whole album (with echoes of that other great song about Lucifer, Charlie Daniels’ “Devil Went Down to Georgia”). Throughout the rest of the album, thugs prowl the street, young couples dance the night away in New York, hearts are broken, and lives are taken, all over pitch-perfect melodies and arrangements.

Comprising ten vocal tracks and three instrumentals, ‘Songs from Lonely Avenue’ marks the first time Setzer has written every track on an album. With all the scope of a Raymond Chandler novel or an Orson Welles film, it’s his most ambitious project to date.

And as he did on 2007’s ‘Wolfgang’s Big Night Out,’ Setzer recruited 87-year-old Frank Comstock, one of the most important and inventive arrangers of instrumental music of the last century, to score the horn arrangements. Comstock wrote music for many of the era’s top artists, including Doris Day, Sonny Dunham, Benny Carter and Judy Garland (not to mention the “Rocky & Bullwinkle” theme!).

Furthermore, the “New King Of Jingle Bell Rock” (Billboard) Brian Setzer and his 18-piece big band will kick off their seventh Christmas Extravaganza 27-date tour on November 20th in Detroit. This fall, Surfdog Records will re-release Setzer’s hugely successful collection of yuletide music: ‘Christmas Rocks’ as well as the ‘Ultimate Christmas’ CD and DVD combination- songs that have become part of the holiday tradition for millions over the last several years.

From launching the rockabilly revolution with the Stray Cats to pioneering the swing revival with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, this Long Island-born innovator has earned his unique place in modern music by walking the line between conceptual discipline and balls-out rockin’. Setzer won three Grammy Awards (two for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “Sleepwalk” from The Dirty Boogie in 1998 and “Caravan” from VaVoom in 2000, plus one for Best Pop Performance with “Jump, Jive an' Wail,” also from The Dirty Boogie) by targeting that place where wild energy and visionary imagination intersect.

Bryan Scary & The Shredding Tears

+ Chicago native BRYAN SCARY recorded his 2007 debut solo, before recruiting the rest of THE SHREDDING TEARS and setting up shop in Brooklyn. The five-piece group features Graham Norwood on guitar, Mike Acreman on keys, David Ostrem on bass, and Brian Bauer on drums, with Scary on vocals and keys. BSST has been called "psychedelic," "progressive," "quirky," and "strange," but they consider themselves first and foremost a pop band. 2008's FLIGHT OF THE KNIFE fused glam, psych rock, and theatrical 70s pop with science fiction narratives and elaborate children's stories. A conceptual tour-de-force, the album hit #6 on the iTunes Rock Chart after being made Editor's Choice, and amassed a significant cult following. The group continues to win fans with their flamboyant and maniacally-energetic stage shows -- multimedia events which showcase the band's story-telling and flair for the dramatic.

BSST's new EP, MAD VALENTINES, is a joint release with Elijah Woods' Simian Records and Old Flame Records - it will drop on October 27th. The band recorded the album in LA with producer Jonathan Sadoff (a member of the band thenewno2). Fogerty rocks in Murcia

+ Rock living legend John Fogerty played last night in San Javier (Murcia) in the first of a series of four shows in Spain, where he has never played. It was time!

+ Fogerty played many of his unforgettable hits, and many others were missing. I guess he could play four or five shows without repeating a hit. Nowadays, the once broken-down cowboy (in his own words) was in perfect rocking shape, happy and with a sensational band, among them Kenny Aronoff, who drummed all night with superb precision.

+ The audience who proved to know all the songs, sang along with John Suzie Q, Who'll stop the rain, Jambalaya, Big train from Memphis, Centerfield, Fortunate son, Have you ever seen the rain, without missing a beat!. Among the audience, Delegado del Gobierno González Tovar was seen rocking not far from Consejero "Fallen Angel" De la Cierva.

+ We'll miss you John, but we have all your guitar riffs (probably you are the man who invented most of the most important guitar riffs in history) and all your wonderful songs. American music, that is!

The spirit of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair of 1969 resonates 40 summers later, as if it were just yesterday.

In 1969, five acts recorded albums for the Columbia, Epic, and RCA labels (divisions of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT) and brought their music to Max Yasgur’s farm that summer. For the first time, THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE couples those albums with music from the festival, providing a pocket portrait of what each artist and band was experiencing during 1969. Each THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE disc will be packaged inside a mini-LP cover with inner paper sleeves: CD-one replicating the front and back covers of the original LP, and CD-two featuring iconic photography of the artist performing at the festival. These mini-LPs will be housed in a paper-board slipcase sharing continuity of design recognition across all five packages. The slipcase will also contain a two-sided 16x20-inch fold-out poster, with one side displaying iconic photography of the artist performing at the festival, and the other side displaying a classic crowd shot of the audience.

The upcoming 40^th anniversary celebration includes such highly-anticipated projects as Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock (which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, starring Demetri Martin, Liev Schreiber and Emile Hirsch, via Focus Features); and Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang’s The Road To Woodstock, written with Holly George-Warren (on HarperCollins’ Ecco imprint).

Announced in April, Sony Music Entertainment has teamed with Woodstock Ventures to launch Woodstock.com, a a cutting edge live music social network for all concerts, including complete artist and event information, access to ticketing, concert reviews, music, blogs, and a forum to connect with other fan events throughout the world. There will be platforms for environmental initiatives, social issues, and other current topics. Visitors to the site can meet on a virtual village green, a platform for developing initiatives about global warming, carbon emissions, and responsible energy use.

The spirit of the Woodstock Generation continues to be a thriving and dynamic force in society because the communal ideas expressed in the music of those artists still resounds loud and clear. The social and political and cultural concerns that informed their lives and music in 1969 are still with us today. And there has never been any better way of experiencing the tumultuous events of 1969 than through the music.

Pretty in pink for a good cause!

Ariel recently released a cover of the Psychedelic Furs’ classic “Pretty in Pink.” The cover takes a new twist on the ‘80s rock classic by adding a string section and infusing Ariel’s Bowie-esque sound. Ariel covered the song not only because of his love for the Furs, but also because he thought it to be the perfect vehicle for spreading optimism and hope amongst women battling breast cancer. Ariel’s close friend of twenty plus years was diagnosed in May 2005 with stage III breast cancer, and today can call herself a survivor. This inspired him to partner with the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and donate proceeds of $.54 cents from each iTunes sale of the single during the entire month of April.

"How could that not influence my songwriting on Lucky One?” Malo asks. “It certainly had an effect on how I wrote for this. + The name Green River Ordinance is given to a common American city ordinance prohibiting door-to-door solicitation. Under such an ordinance, it is illegal for any business to sell their items door-to-door without express permission from the household beforehand. Some versions prohibit all organizations, including non-profit charitable, political, and religious groups, from soliciting or canvassing any household that makes it clear, in writing, that it does not want such solicitations (generally with a "No Trespassing" or "No Solicitations" sign posted). The ordinance is named for the city of Green River, Wyoming, the first city to enact it (Wikipedia dixit).

+Hear Music, the label of so expensive coffees Starbucks, announced some time ago that it has signed renowned singer-songwriter Carly Simon to release This Kind of Love, her highly anticipated first album of all-original songs in eight years. She joins the elite roster of Hear Music artists that includes Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. The album will be released at Starbucks Company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada as well as traditional music retail on April 29, 2008.

+ This Kind of Love ranks among Simon’s most personal albums as well as one of her most stylistically diverse excursions with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to driving rhythms. The CD is co-produced by Simon, Frank Filipetti and Jimmy Webb who also wrote or co-wrote most of the arrangements. Filipetti worked his talent as the engineer as well as producer. + The Lemonheads' second album for Atlantic Records was an unforgettable gem. Powered by infectious melodic hooks and a mix of sweet and subversive lyrics, IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY helped put the band on the map in 1992. Now, Rhino honors the album with the label's special Collector's Edition treatment, remastering and expanding the original for a CD/DVD set that includes unreleased demos along with the DVD debut of the 1993 video Two Weeks In Australia.

+ The album features the trio -- Evan Dando (guitar, vocals), David Ryan (drums) and Juliana Hatfield (bass, backing vocals) -- breezing through 13 songs in just under 30 minutes, including the title track, "My Drug Buddy," "The Turnpike Down" and a romping cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic "Mrs. Robinson. The 10 bonus tracks feature "Shaky Ground," which was originally released as the B-side to "My Drug Buddy." The remaining nine songs are unreleased demos that Dando recorded in 1991, including early renditions of album tracks "Confetti," "Rockin Stroll" and "Hannah & Gabi," plus "Bit Part," which includes vocals from Hatfield.

+ The DVD contains 45 minutes of videos and live performances that were previously released only on VHS as Two Weeks In Australia. The disc features videos for several songs from IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY, including the title track, the breakout single "Mrs. Robinson," "My Drug Buddy" and more. Also included is a video for "Being Around," a song that would appear a year later on the follow-up to RAY and "Half The Time" from the Lemonheads' Atlantic debut, Lovey. A trio of live performances include "Alison's Starting To Happen," "Ride With Me" from Lovey and "It's About Time" from 1993's Come On Feel The Lemonheads. The DVD also features candid commentary by Dando recalling the band's wild Australian antics.

Fountains of Wayne kicks off in Murcia

+ Last night, local radio DJ and now programmer of the Villegas Auditorio in Murcia, Angel H. Sopena, was happy enough to see that his excellent work resulted in success, both artistic and economic, probably also. His debut was not anything.

+ Pop rock band from New York, Fountains of Wayne, gave an energetic show to an enthusiastic audience who sang, shouted and danced all the songs the band played. Although the show was named to present their last record, the excellent "Traffic and Weather", already commented here, the guys also played some of their hits, including radiation vive, stacy's mom, or sink to the bottom.

+ The sound was alright but not impressive. Maybe some more watts could be added to the concert hall (also, the organizers should bring enough beer barrels instead of using litronas and tercios, ji, ji).

+ The guys are on tour, so check out their space to be able to see and hear FoW. If you like pop, pop-rock, alt-rock, power pop, you can't miss them.

Michael Veitch,music and compromise

+ I have had the privilege of listening to a great record. I found a man I did not know, but with perfectly crafted songs that talk about love and compromise, today's problems? You bet.

+ These songs were recorded with special care, as you will find if you listen to them. The Producer is Julie Last, who worked with Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Shawn Colvin, to name a few. She said that "every song was given complete attention to detail", and I agree with that. She adds that " Michael's mature lyrics, strong singing and unique guitar work made it easy to build this set of compelling songs. They all come from his heart and the production has remained true to his vision". And I add, if you like Matthew Sweet or Iain Matthews, you'll love Veitch's music.

+ Finally, important in these days in someway, catchy rhythms, lyrics and verses that go to the bottom of your soul. Later, when you forgot the record, the songs will come back to you, naturally, and you will find yourself singing them. Isn't that the goal of an artist?. Michael Veitch got it.

The Silver Seas, golden harmonies

+ This Nashville band, led by the multi-talented Daniel Tashian, made the catchiest album of the week.

+ I have had this song in my ears for the whole week. With their effortlessly breezy harmonies and indelible hooks, the members of Nashville’s Silver Seas dispense an abundance of beautifully rootsy pop.

+ Their latest album “High Society” is like a soft rock (in a good way) record out of the 70’s that is so pleasant, it’s kind of impossible not to like. They’ve been compared to James Taylor, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, and Van Morrison. In fact, tell me if you recognize a Van Morrison song in the country life.

James Taylor' sweetest songs live

+ Hey, if you plan to motor west, exactly to West Hollywood, CA, around november 28-30, you better try to get tickets to see this man, James Taylor and long time friend Carole King at the legendary The Troubadour. Oh, boy, I wish I could be there!.

+ Do not get fooled by his hat. The man is as bald as myself. James is already about to jump to 60, but believe me, his musical abilities are at his best.

+ James just released a wonderful set of CD/DVD for those of you that still sing fire and rain, you've got a friend, shower the people, and so many others. The title of the set is funny. One man band. But the guy is not playing alone. Almost. But, he's supported by keyboardist Larry Goldings, whom Taylor calls his "one-man band" in the liner notes. The album, recorded at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA during July 2007, is an intimate and predictable one. This is my opinion, of course, but it looks to me that Taylor is playing his songs more about the same way all of his life. Is this a capital sin? No, please!, it is a trademark. Think about Dylan! or Atlantic City in the Live in Dublin' Springsteen records.

U2 remasters The Joshua Tree

+ It was 1987. I heard that record dozens of times, over and over and over and over again. U2 got the circle quadrature!.

+ Now they tell me that U2's The Joshua Tree has been meticulously re-mastered from the original analog master tapes to mark 20 years since its release and will be available on November 20, 2007.

"There has been continuous demand from U2 fans to have The Joshua Tree properly re-mastered," says Paul McGuinness. "As always, the band had to make sure it was right, and now it is."

In 1987, The Joshua Tree reached Number 1 around the world and won a Grammy for Album of the Year, while U2 won the Brit Award for Best International Act and Time Magazine put the band on its cover, proclaiming them "Rock's Hottest Ticket". Including the singles “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For,” “Where The Streets Have No Name” and “With Or Without You,” The Joshua Tree went on to sell in excess of 20 million.

The album will be available in four formats:

A standard CD featuring liner notes from Bill Flanagan, lyrics and unseen photographs from long time collaborator Anton Corbijn.
A double 12" gatefold vinyl format, with the original album pressed across two 180 gram audiophile discs.
A deluxe edition including a second CD of b-sides and demos from the original album sessions.
A limited edition box set containing two CD's and a DVD featuring The Joshua Tree Tour live from the Hippodrome in Paris and other rare video footage.

Raul Midón, soulatin pop

+ This man you have to discover. The first song in his new job, a world within a world, called pick somebody up uses
arrangements lost two decades ago. Those violins recall us of real soul music. His blend uses that old soul music adapted to today's pop taste. I am sure his producer, son of legendary Ariff Mardin, has hit the target with those wonderful songs.

+ Raul Midón, a New Mexico-born, New York-based writer/vocalist/guitarist burst onto the scene in 2005 with his audaciously original debut album, State of Mind, and he's followed it up with an even more memorable song cycle, one that substantiates the depth of his talent and the degree of his dedication. A World Within a World, the title of the new album (Manhattan Records, Sept. 25), might refer to the status of pop music within the culture as a whole; it could also describe the expansive interior realm that this single-minded artist, blind from birth, has created with his imagination.

+ Midón was born in Embudo, N.M., to an Argentinean father and an African-American mother. A passionate music lover for as long as he can remember, Midón started playing drums at age 4 before shifting his focus to the guitar. He turned down a scholarship in creative writing offered by the University of New Mexico after being selected by the University of Miami for its highly regarded jazz program. Staying in Miami after graduating, Midón became an in-demand backup singer, working primarily on Latin projects for artists like Julio Iglesias, Shakira and Alejandro Sanz, while moonlighting as a club performer, sprinkling the requisite cover songs with the original tunes he was starting to write.

+ In 2002, when Midón felt he was ready, he walked away from his lucrative profession in order to pursue a solo career in New York City. “I wanted to become an artist and do what I wanted to do instead of being someone else's hired gun,” he explains. When Midón performed for the legendary producer/arranger Arif Mardin, fresh off the recording of Norah Jones’ breakthrough album, Come Away With Me, he offered the newcomer a deal on the spot-it would be the final signing of Mardin's long career. Raúl readily accepted, eager to form a partnership with the highly skilled veteran and with Arif's multi-instrumentalist son Joe. Father and son co-produced State of Mind, which garnered critical accolades for its heady fusion of old-school soul, timeless pop, Latin, jazz and the singer/songwriter idiom. Intrigued by what the youngster was cooking up, Wonder himself appeared on one track.

+ For A World Within a World, recorded after the death of the elder Mardin, Midón and Joe Mardin tightened the focus, with Joe laying down the grooves and playing additional instruments behind Midón's vocals and guitar parts on the majority of the tracks. “Like his father, Joe is a producer in the old-school sense of the word,” says Midón. “He's interested in how a record sounds; he can do arrangements and conduct an orchestra-which he did on 'Pick Somebody Up.' Joe brought the value of making an album to the project, as opposed to just a collection of songs.”

+ This is not your average pop record-not by a long shot. With A World Within a World, Midón has fashioned an album that is at once audacious and accessible, of the moment and suffused with history; it's personal yet universal, uncompromising yet inviting. This is that rare sort of pop album that could actually make a difference, and as such, it stands right alongside the pivotal works of the artists who inspired it.

Robert Gordon & Marco DiMaggio Trio touring Spain

+ Last night we went to Orihuela (Alicante) to hear and see the old rockabilly master Robert Gordon. Dressed with black slacks and shoes, and wearing a nice black shirt with fire flames, the good ol' rocker sang about a dozen songs, including rockabilly boogie, the way I walk, the fool, and fire. The man still has his trademark voice that made irresistible records more than 25 years ago. And also keeps his star statute, as we observed reverential looks both by the local organization (bikers' murcia chapter) and by his backing band. But this is another point. His backing band, I mean.

+ Of course, Mr. Gordon was very nice to everybody. He thanked the audience after each song and finished his act sending them some kisses (even most of the audience was full of bikers, you know, long hairdos and beards, big bellys and all that stuff, but nice guys and girls, music lovers).

+ But, as we were very pleased by Robert's singing, we were more than impressed by his band. The Marco DiMaggio Trio, which you can see at the right of this text. The bassman is on the left, Mattheo, Marco is at Robert's left, and the drummer, also Marco I believe, at the right of the image. The guitarist himself really keeps the show intense, the guy knows very well this style, using the pick (with the thumb and the index finger) and the other three fingers in a very professional way.They also maintained the audience rocking and rolling in the intermezzo Robert Gordon went to have a rest. His voice recalls a bit that of Raul Malo, but his guitar technique is superior. They performed a wonderful full-band version of the Buddy Holly's classic a capella Everyday that you can add to your Holly records as the version he would have recorded if not for the plane crash. A rockabilly version of The Police hit every breath you take did not satisfy as much as the rest of the set, but gave the opportunity the bikers to hug each other, he, he.

Music goes to film - U2 PopMart Live in Mexico

+ U2, PopMart Live in Mexico City.

+ ¡Muchos huevos!, finally a rock band publish a concert not recorded in Barcelona!+ The performance took place at Foro Sol Autodromo, in Mexico City, and it was filmed 3rd December 1997. The director was David Mallet. It was ten years ago, but it looks like today. One more video to add to the huge videography list of the group.

+ Impressive sound, impecable realisation and edition. And the music... and the mise en scene. From the de Niro' s The Bull's inspired entry of the band, surrounded by mal encarados real bodyguards to the huge watt consumption of the thousands leds of the videoscreens at the back of the band, the DVD bring us back memories of a time when U2, then THE rock band par excellence, ruled the arenas and stadiums throughout the world, with their succesful mix of pop-rock emotional anthems and bloody popular hooks, and made the change to a more modern, nocturnal and global sound.

+ There is another thing that impressed me. The booklet that accompanies the package. I thought about using gloves to touch it, it is so futuristic, so brilliant, so glossy. I thought, oh boy, this is plastic!. But, it was paper. Incredibly prepared and printed paper.

Will Dailey, close to the new Bruce

+ Boston singer/songwriter Will Dailey received last year an award for his songs. The album collecting them has just been released. The title, Back Flipping Forward. The prize was the 2006 Boston Music Award for Best Male Singer/Songwriter. Not bad, eh?

* Listen to some of these songs in his space.

+ The themes and ideas in Dailey’s lyrics hold true in my opinion. Within such songs as Eliza, Good To Me, and Undone, the ideas of redemption and restlessness play out as if in an early Bruce Springsteen song. In one of the strongest lyrical passages, at the conclusion of Rise, Dailey sings, “When I grow up/I hope I get the hang of this/I bleed from 6 strings/I let the truth fall from my lips.”

+ Will's vocals are outstanding and very very personal. You may have a hard time trying to tell a name that reminds you that voice. Maybe that's because he's got a broken heart, as he sings in the opening track, the excellent Boom, Boom.

+ Do not expect only an acoustic guitar and a voice. No. The record is produced according to actual taste in pop. Unexpected guitar solos and horns and infectious choruses are smartly distributed, as in Grand Opening or in Rise. Ryan Adams will probably sing this song soon!

+ Hollywood Hills is another gem, with that special jazz sound given by the great rhythm and the clarinet.

+ I am not sure this record will make its way in Spain, but singer-songwriters like Will Dailey, we do not have!

+ It was almost 4o years ago today. Sylvester Stewart was about to win his place in rock history, together with other hippys in San Francisco's summer of love. Oh, boy, they probably wouldn't wear flowers in the hair, but I can tell you that his and his group clothes very well reflect that sunny era. His songs also!

+ They are not very well known in Spain, but every rock connoisseur has to remember them as a wonderful surprise in The Festival of Woodstock. The band performed their set during the early-morning hours of August 17, 1969. The movie was of course seen in Spain later!

+ There was a time where Motown sound was going to be replaced by something we can call psychedelic soul. Listen to Life to know what I mean. Even The Beatles's infectious Obladi, Oblada is there!.

The great lost Cash's concert

+ It is strange. Now some intrepid workers managed to get Johnny Cash's home completely burnt, The cause is unknown, but Steele said the flames spread quickly because construction workers had recently applied a flammable wood preservative to the exterior of the house. The preservative was also being applied inside the house. No workers were injured, but one firefighter was slightly hurt while fighting the fire.

+ They did a ring of fire, in five minutes everything was gone. Everything?. No, not at all, my friend. Now you have an excellent piece of live Cash's music. In Asbury Park, NJ, in 1990.

+ I could not get the whole history about how they decided to recover this musical gem. But, I tell you it is worth the work. The man in black performs some 13 years before his passing, still in perfect shape with his band, including his son John Carter Cash and his second wife, beloved June Carter. With June, they do a great Jackson, energetic, rough voice, trading verses with Johnny.

+ So, this record is really a must. In fact, how many live records do you think Cash did?. Ok, one?. You bet!.

Los Escarabajos - Beatles from Sevilla

+ I read the news today, oh boy, and learned about one of the best The Beatles' replica groups in Spain. Their name is the most appropriate in spanish. Since The Fab Four used the change of a letter for not being The Beetles, these andalusian boys really got a hold on these sounds and music. And in the name!

+ This knowledge is due to Diego A. Manrique, the paperback writer, who learned it from big ol' Gonzalo García Pelayo (anybody here remember "Para Vosotros, Jóvenes", with Carlos Tena?). Big ol' Diego can help it since he is a long time recognized fan of the Rolling Stones, when he writes about the Beatles. You can not see much emotion there.

..... The new album by pop rock musicians Fountains of Wayne is just great. Impressive collection of pop songs. I hope you know how to get to listen to the songs. If I would have a rock group, those would be the songs I (we) will (surely) play.

.... Right now, strapped for cash really breaks me down, this better me good gets me singing all day long, someone to love is to show Dover (spanish group with disco ambitions!) how great songs are made (yeah, I know, they also know, it was just a joke), and trafffic and weather is the song.

.... Maybe they' ve made it. The perfect pop song. Oh, boy, I wish they still pursue the task some more dozen of years!.

May 1st will also see the digital premiere of Costello’s first 11 original albums, marking the first time they will be available for digital downloads and mobile tones. These 11 original albums will be available for download exclusively on the iTunes Music Store (www.itunes.com) for 30 days before they are made available to all the online partners. The albums will also be released in their original versions as digipaks with booklets and obie sleeves.

+ El hombre enfadado ha vuelto. Ya lleva tres estupendos álbumes esta década, con un puñado de canciones salvables para incluir en su larga trayectoria.

+ Escucha Nation of Shopkeepers, (rm) from Your Country (2004). Impressive the first song, Anything for a laugh (we're all clowns, I say).

+ Ok, I'm back. It took more than I thought. This time was so great I really forgot everything. And I really mean it. Everything, work, women, cadillacs and so on...

+ Then, I guess we will keep on digitizing those singles of mine (and of others, he, he).

+ Today I bring you the first two singles of a band (new wave, power pop) that could well be labelled as a one hit wonder. Their main (I should say huge) hit was a song devoted to Jenny's phone number, which appeared on a wall someday making all the boys (and some girls) dial it for ever. Tommy Tutone is the band.

* The first album, contained these two great songs:

+ For us, spaniards, please be kind to us and tell us which one of these meanings is the good one, applicable to The Kinks:

+ Whatever, in 1980, Dave Davies, they said he was always in his brother' shadow, published a good album. Twenty five years later, the 2 songs I have are in a single. Two great songs, I believe. The A side is a melodic song, a classic pop song. The B-side is a rocker, full of rhythm and passion. Dave did a good record, more if we think that he played almost every instrument. Of course, he composed all the songs.

+ I told you yesterday. I went to see the men. As the guitarist presented themselves. We are the Robert Cray Band. What a band, precise rhythm, impressive piano and organ lines, great guitar. A band. A band of blues...

+ Line up: drums, Kevin Hayes; organ, Jim Pugh; bass, Karl Sevareid; guitar and voice, Robert Cray.

+ Songs they played: I guess I showed her, Poor Johnny*, Right Next Door (Because Of Me), Smoking gun, Survivor, Bad Influence, Impostor, Our last time, That ain't love*, My last regret*, Twenty*, I'm walkin'*, Up in the sky...

+ With *, those songs from his last cd, twenty.

+ Some people (I guess british, there are a lot of them in the mediterranean coast of Murcia) wooooed Robert when he was singing those terrible lines of twenty about the soldier mission in Iraq; please, read yesterday's post. They left immediately after the song finished. Bye bye, war supporters!.

+ Robert changed the guitar with every song. I guess he is a fanatic of perfect tuning. Moreover, singing the first lines of twenty he didn't like something and took it off. The technician came immediately with other guitar, the grey one. He used mainly two Fender Stratocasters and one Telecaster with the sitar effect to play the last song, up in the sky. His only talk after finishing songs, was thank you so very much and the name of next song, like this.

+ So, my final impression. It was a great show, but I needed some more blues. Of course. The sound was great and the musicians were in shape. 8 out of 10.

+ I have known the man since the 80's, probably since his (their) first album, strong persuader, and liked throughout all these years his wonderful voice, of course his guitar, but mainly his voice, his soulful voice, his histories of love and not love...

+ The gentleman I bring you today is well known for many of us. It is one of the pioneers of the new jamaican music and composer of one of their classic songs, the isrealites. But that was at the end of 60's. It took him almost 10 more years to reach some success again, mainly because of the the british ska movement.

+ So, by this time you should know that this gentleman is Desmond Dekker, who in 1980 published his famed album Black and Dekker., re-recording all his previous hits.

+ More important, this record was published by Stiff Records, legendary company of some of the english new wave sounds. And even more important, who was the band that accompanied Desmond in this album?, yeeeeeeeeeeeeees, The Rumour.

+ Here you can have access at clips of the whole lp.

+ The single, depicting a very black Desmond in a white suit even with white tie, contains two excellent pieces of ska, both composed by himself (Desmond Dacres):

* A - It mek (original from 1968).

* B - Hippo.

+ It's fun, isn't it?. No modern ska these days?

+ The Beat was the band that played with power-pop enthusiast Paul Collins (madrileño de adopción, if you don't know, favorite friend of Madrid's pop and rock).

+ But The Beat was also the name of a ska group. In fact, still it is the name of a ska band. But, it is difficult to find the early vinyls, not even the covers (i'll try to get pictures space soon). But, worry not, I have the songs.

+ They say that ska is reggae made easy. Read it here together with a small history of english ska.

+ Ok, then, at that time (80's) we had The Specials, Madness, The Selecter and many many others. I think I have some more ska singles I will be digitizing. So make sure you are ready to dance the offbeat!.

+ Doll by Doll was a group that came with the new wave-punk scene that had a very reduced success at that time (beginning of the eighties).

+ Doll by Doll made some records and soon its front man, a scottish guy called Jackie Leven, started his own career. He's had quite a career!.

* In 1982, they published this single I bring you today:

- Under my thumb (a classic Jagger/Richards' early piece).

- Eternal (a slow Leven composition).
