Men in black

* Johnny Cash, the man in black.

+ Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

hablo claro, tú me entenderás

No, we won't back down

+ Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, again, Pearl Jam won't back down either.

Well I wont back down, no I wont back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I wont back down

Gonna stand my ground, wont be turned around
And Ill keep this world from draggin me down
Gonna stand my ground and I wont back down

Hey baby, there aint no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I wont back down.

Well I know whats right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin me around
But Ill stand my ground and I wont back down

Hey baby there aint no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I wont back down
No, I wont back down

19 years without Stevie Ray

To complete the summer portion of the "In Step" tour, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble played two shows on August 25 & 26 at Alpine Valley Theatre in East Troy, WI, while on tour with Eric Clapton. For travel to the next venue, the tour manager reserved four helicopters to circumvent congested highway traffic. In very dense fog, the helicopters were clear for lift-off at 12:40 A.M. Just past the lift-off zone was a 300-foot hill. Vaughan's helicopter pilot was unfamiliar with the flight pattern for exiting the area, and did not climb to sufficient altitude immediately after take-off. Vaughan's helicopter veered off to one side and crashed into the hill. According to the findings as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the accident was determined to be inadequate planning by the pilot, and failure to attain sufficient altitude to clear an obstacle. Fog and haze, as well as the rising terrain were listed as contributing factors. All occupants including Vaughan, the pilot and three members of Eric Clapton's travel group were killed on impact. On August 31, 1990, funeral services were held for Vaughan in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. Brother Jimmie, mother Martha, and girlfriend Janna were in attendance. Among the mourners were all three members of ZZ Top, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson Browne. Vaughan was interred at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Oak Cliff, a part of Dallas, Texas.

BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA MEETS FILM NOIR ON ‘SONGS FROM LONELY AVENUE’

Rockabilly guitar-slinger, big band impresario, and all-around cool cat Brian Setzer takes a walk on the dark side with his film noir-inspired new album ‘Songs From Lonely Avenue,’ out October 13th on Surfdog Records.

With a propulsive rhythm, an ominous minor key, wickedly good instrumental solos and the familiar character of the Devil up to his old tricks, opening track “Trouble Train” sets the mood for the whole album (with echoes of that other great song about Lucifer, Charlie Daniels’ “Devil Went Down to Georgia”). Throughout the rest of the album, thugs prowl the street, young couples dance the night away in New York, hearts are broken, and lives are taken, all over pitch-perfect melodies and arrangements.

Comprising ten vocal tracks and three instrumentals, ‘Songs from Lonely Avenue’ marks the first time Setzer has written every track on an album. With all the scope of a Raymond Chandler novel or an Orson Welles film, it’s his most ambitious project to date.

And as he did on 2007’s ‘Wolfgang’s Big Night Out,’ Setzer recruited 87-year-old Frank Comstock, one of the most important and inventive arrangers of instrumental music of the last century, to score the horn arrangements. Comstock wrote music for many of the era’s top artists, including Doris Day, Sonny Dunham, Benny Carter and Judy Garland (not to mention the “Rocky & Bullwinkle” theme!).

Furthermore, the “New King Of Jingle Bell Rock” (Billboard) Brian Setzer and his 18-piece big band will kick off their seventh Christmas Extravaganza 27-date tour on November 20th in Detroit. This fall, Surfdog Records will re-release Setzer’s hugely successful collection of yuletide music: ‘Christmas Rocks’ as well as the ‘Ultimate Christmas’ CD and DVD combination- songs that have become part of the holiday tradition for millions over the last several years.

From launching the rockabilly revolution with the Stray Cats to pioneering the swing revival with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, this Long Island-born innovator has earned his unique place in modern music by walking the line between conceptual discipline and balls-out rockin’. Setzer won three Grammy Awards (two for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “Sleepwalk” from The Dirty Boogie in 1998 and “Caravan” from VaVoom in 2000, plus one for Best Pop Performance with “Jump, Jive an' Wail,” also from The Dirty Boogie) by targeting that place where wild energy and visionary imagination intersect.

The Boxmasters

+ Billy Bob Thornton, the actor behind so many excellent films (not including Bad Santa), plays good old rockabilly with his group The Boxmasters. Their modern mix is irresistible!

+ Two good records (The Boxmasters and Modbilly) are there for you to know them.

* Listen to Poor house.

Reno’s sparkling ahead honey I thought I’d give you a call.
I’m looking for tomorrow to be sunny in the midst of this snowfall.
I let you and the kids down for way too long now,
I’m hoping to turn our life around if I can just figure out how.

I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, pay off those loans
I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, and I won’t do it stoned.

I’ll sit with the grannies at the nickel machines
and pull handles til my hands are blue
I’ll do just about anything to bring a future home to you
I put down the Pales and liquor
You know I tried to keep a job
I just think this’d be quicker
If I could win a little off the mob

I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, pay off those loans
I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, now that I’m not stoned.

Well my plan didn’t work exactly honey, but I do have a little good news:
I’m not bringing home any money, but I didn’t turn back the booze.
I guess it’s back to the drawing board, ideas are starting to brew
I’m bringing back all I can afford and that’s love to the kids and you.

I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, pay off those loans
I’m working on a plan to save our home
Keep us outta the poor house, and build a house of stone

* Or listen to Turn it over.

+ Great Billy!

Bryan Scary & The Shredding Tears

+ Chicago native BRYAN SCARY recorded his 2007 debut solo, before recruiting the rest of THE SHREDDING TEARS and setting up shop in Brooklyn. The five-piece group features Graham Norwood on guitar, Mike Acreman on keys, David Ostrem on bass, and Brian Bauer on drums, with Scary on vocals and keys. BSST has been called "psychedelic," "progressive," "quirky," and "strange," but they consider themselves first and foremost a pop band. 2008's FLIGHT OF THE KNIFE fused glam, psych rock, and theatrical 70s pop with science fiction narratives and elaborate children's stories. A conceptual tour-de-force, the album hit #6 on the iTunes Rock Chart after being made Editor's Choice, and amassed a significant cult following. The group continues to win fans with their flamboyant and maniacally-energetic stage shows -- multimedia events which showcase the band's story-telling and flair for the dramatic.

BSST's new EP, MAD VALENTINES, is a joint release with Elijah Woods' Simian Records and Old Flame Records - it will drop on October 27th. The band recorded the album in LA with producer Jonathan Sadoff (a member of the band thenewno2). An additional EP track was then recorded in Brooklyn and produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples In Stereo). The lead-off track on the EP, "Andromeda's Eyes," is available here.

Zac Brown Band, country and pride

+ Listen to this, today it's friday. We are not in the USA, but in Murcia. It's steaming, hot as hell, but tonight:

And the radio up

Fogerty rocks in Murcia

+ Rock living legend John Fogerty played last night in San Javier (Murcia) in the first of a series of four shows in Spain, where he has never played. It was time!

+ Fogerty played many of his unforgettable hits, and many others were missing. I guess he could play four or five shows without repeating a hit. Nowadays, the once broken-down cowboy (in his own words) was in perfect rocking shape, happy and with a sensational band, among them Kenny Aronoff, who drummed all night with superb precision.

+ The audience who proved to know all the songs, sang along with John Suzie Q, Who'll stop the rain, Jambalaya, Big train from Memphis, Centerfield, Fortunate son, Have you ever seen the rain, without missing a beat!. Among the audience, Delegado del Gobierno González Tovar was seen rocking not far from Consejero "Fallen Angel" De la Cierva.

+ We'll miss you John, but we have all your guitar riffs (probably you are the man who invented most of the most important guitar riffs in history) and all your wonderful songs. American music, that is!

+ And in september, new album by The Blue Ridge Rangers!

The Woodstock experience

Wonderful release of the Woodstock experience since June 30th.

The spirit of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair of 1969 resonates 40 summers later, as if it were just yesterday.

In 1969, five acts recorded albums for the Columbia, Epic, and RCA labels (divisions of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT) and brought their music to Max Yasgur’s farm that summer. For the first time, THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE couples those albums with music from the festival, providing a pocket portrait of what each artist and band was experiencing during 1969. Available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting June 30th – in newly-designed eco-friendly 2CD packages (see details below) – will be the following five titles:

  • JEFFERSON AIRPLANE - THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE

(RCA/Legacy) Includes Volunteers, their sixth and final album with the original lineup before all the changes came in 1970, with “We Can Be Together,” “Good Shepherd,” “Wooden Ships,” “Eskimo Blue Day,” and the title tune; coupled with 13 songs from their Sunday wee-hours set at the festival, including six previously unissued live tracks.

  • JANIS JOPLIN - THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE

(Columbia/Legacy) Includes I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, her first and only solo album released during her lifetime, with “Try (Just A Little Bit Harder),” the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” and Rodgers & Hart’s “Little Girl Blue”; coupled with her entire 10-song festival set, including three previously unissued live tracks.

  • SANTANA - THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE

(Columbia/Legacy) Includes the debut Santana LP, with “Evil Ways,” “Savor,” “Persuasion,” “Soul Sacrifice,” and Olatunji’s “Jingo”; coupled with their entire 8-song set, including one previously unissued live track;

  • SLY & THE FAMILY STONE – THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE

(Epic/Legacy) Includes their breakthrough fourth album, Stand!, with “Everyday People,” “Sing A Simple Song,” “Stand!” and “I Want To Take You Higher”; coupled with their entire 8-song set, including seven previously unissued live tracks.

  • JOHNNY WINTER - THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE (Columbia/Legacy) Includes the debut Johnny Winter solo LP, with homages to Robert Johnson (“When You Got A Good

Friend”), Sonny Boy Williamson (“Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”), Lightnin’ Hopkins (“Back Door Friend”) and B.B. King (“Be Careful With A Fool”); coupled with eight songs from his Sunday evening set at the festival, including seven previously unissued live tracks.

Each THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE disc will be packaged inside a mini-LP cover with inner paper sleeves: CD-one replicating the front and back covers of the original LP, and CD-two featuring iconic photography of the artist performing at the festival. These mini-LPs will be housed in a paper-board slipcase sharing continuity of design recognition across all five packages. The slipcase will also contain a two-sided 16x20-inch fold-out poster, with one side displaying iconic photography of the artist performing at the festival, and the other side displaying a classic crowd shot of the audience.

The upcoming 40th anniversary celebration includes such highly-anticipated projects as Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock (which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, starring Demetri Martin, Liev Schreiber and Emile Hirsch, via Focus Features); and Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang’s The Road To Woodstock, written with Holly George-Warren (on HarperCollins’ Ecco imprint).

Announced in April, Sony Music Entertainment has teamed with Woodstock Ventures to launch Woodstock.com, a a cutting edge live music social network for all concerts, including complete artist and event information, access to ticketing, concert reviews, music, blogs, and a forum to connect with other fan events throughout the world. There will be platforms for environmental initiatives, social issues, and other current topics. Visitors to the site can meet on a virtual village green, a platform for developing initiatives about global warming, carbon emissions, and responsible energy use.

The spirit of the Woodstock Generation continues to be a thriving and dynamic force in society because the communal ideas expressed in the music of those artists still resounds loud and clear. The social and political and cultural concerns that informed their lives and music in 1969 are still with us today. And there has never been any better way of experiencing the tumultuous events of 1969 than through the music.

Pretty in pink for a good cause!

Ariel recently released a cover of the Psychedelic Furs’ classic “Pretty in Pink.” The cover takes a new twist on the ‘80s rock classic by adding a string section and infusing Ariel’s Bowie-esque sound. Ariel covered the song not only because of his love for the Furs, but also because he thought it to be the perfect vehicle for spreading optimism and hope amongst women battling breast cancer. Ariel’s close friend of twenty plus years was diagnosed in May 2005 with stage III breast cancer, and today can call herself a survivor. This inspired him to partner with the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and donate proceeds of $.54 cents from each iTunes sale of the single during the entire month of April.

It’s a great way for music lovers to make a contribution towards eradicating breast cancer while adding new music to their iTunes libraries.

Please visit www.arielaparicio.com/komen for the direct link where you can purchase the single.

Rodney Crowell, master

+ Why this man does not have about the same recognition as Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen, for instance, is a mistery to me.

+ His most recent work, sex and gasoline, is another gem of wonderful songs with soulful lyrics.

+ The album, follower of the spirit of his recent records, since The Houston Kid in 2001, Fate's right hand in 2003 and The Outsider in 2005. Get to know him before it's late.

Green river ordinance, today's rock

+ They say you will find many 80's and 90's easily recognizable influences when you listen to Green River Ordinance first record in a major label, Out of My Hands. But I do not think this is a sin, isn't guys?

+ I think that the merit of these guys is to release a wonderful set of rock songs, perfectly fitted to today's music. If you agree, listen to them.

* Come on.

Raul Malo, he's a lucky one

+ Soon, a review of cuban-american musician Raul Malo, leader of the great The Mavericks.

+
Raul Malo’s Fantasy Records label debut album, Lucky One, finds him fully shedding his musical shackles. “I have been fighting my whole life against people who want to pigeonhole music. I feel like I’ve got no restrictions anymore.” Malo is known for his work as the frontman of the Grammy Award-winning, globally platinum- and gold-certified band the Mavericks. Following two albums of covers, Lucky One is Malo’s first album original material in seven years.

+ Malo has earned much critical respect over the years. USA Today applauded “a voice that seems to have no limits of range or versatility.” The New York Times said, “Malo has an exceptional voice, a burnished tenor that harks back to Roy Orbison and the great Cuban singer Beny Moré.” Rolling Stone added, “Raul Malo has a voice on par with the best of ‘em: Sinatra, George Jones and Orbison.” And The Wall Street Journal opined: “Malo’s superb voice is big and melodic with a natural vibrato. Exquisite.”

+ Malo wrote Lucky One over a two-year period at his Nashville home and was so happy with the results that several of his home demos appear as final versions on the CD. For the balance of the album, he once again enlisted Steve Berlin, best known for his work with Los Lobos and who worked on Malo’s 2001 Today album, as co-producer. “I trust Steve musically,” Malo says. “Art comes first with him. That’s the most important quality of all. Nothing gets in the way of that.” Lucky One follows You’re Only Lonely and After Hours, two CDs of cover songs written by Malo’s favorite tunesmiths including Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson and Roger Miller. "How could that not influence my songwriting on Lucky One?” Malo asks. “It certainly had an effect on how I wrote for this. There’s an appreciation for song structure, melody and lyric that these guys certainly had.” Songs on Lucky One range from the upbeat “Moonlight Kiss,” to songs like “One More Angel” and “Rosalie,” which take on mortality and the loss of life. “Hello Again” is a deceptively upbeat, swinging tale of heartbreak, and the closing track “So Beautiful” is an ultimately uplifting benediction influenced by events in and outside Malo’s home.

Green River Ordinance, rockers

+ The name Green River Ordinance is given to a common American city ordinance prohibiting door-to-door solicitation. Under such an ordinance, it is illegal for any business to sell their items door-to-door without express permission from the household beforehand. Some versions prohibit all organizations, including non-profit charitable, political, and religious groups, from soliciting or canvassing any household that makes it clear, in writing, that it does not want such solicitations (generally with a "No Trespassing" or "No Solicitations" sign posted). The ordinance is named for the city of Green River, Wyoming, the first city to enact it (Wikipedia dixit).

+ But, Green River Ordinance are texan rockers releasing Out Of My Hands on February 24, 2009. The band is composed of singer/guitarist Josh Jenkins, brothers Jamey (guitar) and Geoff Ice (bass), Denton Hunker (drums) and Joshua Wilkerson (guitar). For Out Of My Hands, the band teamed up with producers Mark Endert (Natasha Bedingfield, Maroon 5, Gavin DeGraw), Jordan Critz and Paul Ebersold (Sister Hazel, 3 Doors Down, Third Day) while still keeping the songwriting in-house. The resulting album will be familiar to the band’s hardcore fans while reflecting the additional time and expertise that went into its creation.

+
Out Of My Hands builds on accessible, hook-laden songs suitable for cruising—windows down and radio blaring. Reminiscent of arena-ready, larger-than-life rock bands, Green River Ordinance expertly blends emotive vocals, guitars-to-11 and anthemic choruses to deliver moments certain to move crowds, with lighters (or phones) inevitably waving in the air (unknown writer, good!).

+ Listen to the guys in their space or in facebook.

I wanna do bad things with you

* Jace Everett - Bad Things.

I wanna do bad things with you.

When you came in the air went out.
And every shadow filled up with doubt.
I don't know who you think you are,
But before the night is through,
I wanna do bad things with you.

I'm the kind to sit up in his room.
Heart sick an' eyes filled up with blue.
I don't know what you've done to me,
But I know this much is true:
I wanna do bad things with you.

When you came in the air went out.
And all those shadows there filled up with doubt.
I don't know who you think you are,
But before the night is through,
I wanna do bad things with you.
I wanna do real bad things with you.
Ow, ooh.

I don't know what you've done to me,
But I know this much is true:
I wanna do bad things with you.
I wanna do real bad things with you.
