Nerina Pallot - Everybody's Gone to War

* Now that we know that they knew, although we knew it from the beginning, again, we have to say it again:

* Nerina Pallot: everybody's gone to war.

I've got a friend, he's a pure-bred killing machine,
He said he's waited his whole damn life for this,
I knew him well when he was seventeen,
Now he's a man who'll be dead by Christmas.

And, so...
Everybody's going to war,
But we don't know what we're fighting for,
Don't tell me it's a worthy cause,
No cause could be so worthy.

If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober,
If hope is a song I guess it's all over,
How to have faith, when faith is a crime?
I don't want to die...
If God's on our side, then God is a joker,
Asleep on the job, his children fall over,
Running out through the door and straight to the sky,
I don't want to die...

For every man who wants to rule the world,
There'll be a man who just wants to be free,
What do we learn but what should not be learnt?
Too late to find a cure for this disease.

so...
Everybody's going to war,
But we don't know what we're fighting for,
Don't tell me it's a worthy cause,
No cause could be so worthy.

If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober,
If hope is a song, I guess it's all over,
How to have faith, when faith is a crime?
I don't want to die...
If God's on our side, then God is a joker,
Asleep on the job, his children fall over,
Running out through the door, and straight to the sky,
I don't want to die...
I-I-I-I
I-I-I-I
don't want to die,
I-I don't want to die...

I've got a friend, he's a pure-bred killing machine,
I think he might be dead by Christmas...

A change has come

+ Sam Cooke, in 1964. Did he know?. He was killed before the song was even released!

+ Hear it:

* One *Two *Three

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

+ I hope, a change has come!

B.B. King, piece of museum (not yet!)

+ The King of the Blues is set to release a new album featuring covers of old blues songs from B.B. King’s early influences. With production by T Bone Burnett (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello) the set revisits the music that influenced B.B. in the 1950s, the beginning of King’s extraordinary professional journey that, literally, changed the texture of modern blues playing. One Kind Favor is the title of the effort.

+ Recorded at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles, CA, One Kind Favor is meant to sound like an album recorded in the 50s. To get this sound Burnett and King replicated the kind of blues band King had back in the day bringing in some of the greats – Dr. John on piano, Nathan East on stand up acoustic bass and Jim Keltner on drums, to name a few. Studio conditions of the time were reproduced. The result is a vintage sounding album filled with the songs that influenced King in his early days as an artist.

+ The full track listing for One Kind Favor, along with the name of the artist who originally recorded the track, is:” See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” (Lemon Jefferson), “I Get So Weary” (T-Bone Walker), “Get These Blues Off Me” (Lee Vida Walker), “How Many More Years” (Chester Burnett), “Waiting For Your Call” (Oscar Lollie), “My Love Is Down” (Lonnie Johnson), “The World Is Gone Wrong” ( Walter Vinson, also known as Walter Jacobs, and Lonnie Chatmon>, core members of the Mississippi Sheiks), "Blues Before Sunrise” (John Lee Hooker), “Midnight Blues” (John Willie “Shifty” Henry), “Backwater Blues” (Big Bill Broonzy), “Sitting On Top Of The World” (Walter Vinson and Lonnie ChatmonTomorrow Night” (Lonnie Johnson).

+ Other B.B. news you might be interested are that on September 13th King– one of the few musicians in the world to be so honored – presided the opening of the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in his hometown of Indianola, MS. Also in September B.B. King will began hosting his own weekly radio show on XM Radio on their newly relaunched blues channel “BB Kings Bluesville” (XM 74).

+ For more than 60 years, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them classics, won 14 Grammy® Awards, been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of the Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award and the NARM >National Association of Recording Merchandisers) Chairman’s Award, among many other awards. In a special ceremony at the Library of Congress, Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington presented B.B. with a “Living Legend” medal in honor of his achievements as a musician and ambassador for the blues. B.B. King continues to bring his music to audiences around the globe spending the better part of each year on the road with his beloved guitar, “Lucille.”

Jessie's girl, Rick Springfield

+Be advised that the man has got a brand new album. Great!

*One *Two *Three

Jessie is a friend,
Yeah, I know he's been
A good friend of mine
But lately something's changed
That ain't hard to define
Jessie's got himself a girl
And I want to make her mine
And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body,
I just know it
Yeah 'n' he's holding her in his arms late,
Late at night

You know, I wish that I had Jessie's girl,
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that
I play along with the charade,
there doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know, I feel so dirty
When they start talking cute
I wanna tell her that I love her,
But the point is probably moot
'Cos she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body,
I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

Like Jessie's girl,
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman,
Where can I find a woman like that
And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time,
Wondering what she don't see in me
I've been funny,
I've been cool with the lines
Ain't that the way
Love supposed to be
Tell me, where can I find a woman like that

[Solo]

You know, I wish that I had Jessie's girl,
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I want Jessie's girl,
Where can I find a woman like that, like
Jessie's girl,
I wish that I had Jessie's girl,
I want,
I want Jessie's girl

American land, Bruce Springsteen

*One

What is this land of America, so many travel there
I'm going now while I'm still young, my darling meet me there
Wish me luck my lovely, I'll send for you when I can
And we'll make our home in the American land

Over there all the woman wear silk and satin to their knees*
And children dear, the sweets, I hear, are growing on the trees*
Gold comes rushing out the river straight into your hands*
If you make your home in the American land*

There's diamonds in the sidewalks, there's gutters lined in song
Dear I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard working man
Who will make his home in the American land

I docked at Ellis Island in a city of light and spire
I wandered to the valley of red-hot steel and fire****
We made the steel that built the cities with the sweat of our two hands
And I made my home in the American land

There's diamonds in the sidewalk, there's gutters lined in song
Dear I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard working man
Who will make his home in the American land

The McNicholas, the Posalski's, the Smiths, Zerillis too**
The Blacks, the Irish, the Italians, the Germans and the Jews
The Puerto Ricans, illegals, the Asians, Arabs miles from home***-*****
Come across the water with a fire down below******

They died building the railroads, worked to bones and skin
They died in the fields and factories, names scattered in the wind
They died to get here a hundred years ago, they're dyin' now
The hands that built the country we're all trying to keep down

There's diamonds in the sidewalk, there's gutters lined in song
Dear I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard working man
Who will make his home in the American land
Who will make his home in the American land
Who will make his home in the American land

Johnny el Sureño - Hearts of stone

*One *Bonus (don't call me baby)

You stare in the mirror at the lines in your face
And you try to see, girl
The way things were when we were at your place
In the days it was just you and me, girl
And you cry because things ain't like before
Well don't you know they can't be that way anymore
But don't worry baby

CHORUS

I can't talk now, I'm not alone
So put your ear close to the phone
'Cause this is the last dance
This is the last chance for hearts of stone

If there was something, baby, that I could do
Something that would last, honey, I would
But we all know, girl, especially you do
How you can't return to your past, no
So girl close your eyes and I'll be there
Hold me once more and we can go anywhere
Ah, we could

CHORUS

And you cry because things ain't like before
Well don't you know they can't be like that anymore

Chris Rea, Let's Dance

*One *Two *Three (and a good one)

When you sing of the joy only love can bring
Heaven knows it's in my heart and my soul
Caught in a world full of tears
So many bad times and fears
So while there's a chance and you're near

Let's dance
Let's dance

There's a world far away from the one we see
There's a dream I will never let go
One thing is certainly true
This moment's for me and for you
So while there's not a thing that we can do

Let's dance
Let's dance

John Mellencamp goes to folk and blues

+ John Mellencamp’s eagerly anticipated new album, Life, Death, Love and Freedom, produced by T Bone Burnett, has just been released.

+ Mellencamp has characterized the album as a collection of “modern electric folk songs.” With backing from his legendary touring band, the album’s 14 tracks were recorded at his studio in Bloomington, Indiana and mixed in Los Angeles with Burnett behind the boards for all of the sessions. Mellencamp cites Burnett’s production as key to “finding the soul of each song.”

+ “John Mellencamp is true original, a writer and performing artist of passion, talent and spirit who in the course of his exceptional career has maintained a unique and distinctive voice in his songwriting,” said Glen Barros, president & CEO of Concord Music Group who oversees the Hear Music label, releasing the disc. “The songs on this record are perhaps his most intimate, honest and poignant of his career”.

+ The album will be the first ever release in the ΧΟΔΕ (CODE) format. T Bone Burnett and his team of engineers developed CODE, a proprietary audio technology that creates high-definition audio files that are virtually indistinguishable from the original master tapes. The resonance, warmth and presence that has been realized with CODE is unprecedented in the digital era. The CODE version of “Life, Death, Love and Freedom” is a DVD that will come packaged with a standard CD version of the album, available at all retail outlets, at no additional cost to the consumer. The CODE disc is playable on virtually all DVD machines including stand-alone players and drives integrated into computer systems. The DVD’s content can be copied into most computer music software including iTunes and can, then, be downloaded onto personal music players such as the iPod. The standard CD is included to answer all possible compatibility questions. Mellencamp commented, “When T Bone introduced me to CODE, it was a remarkable experience. I could hear the music the way it was intended to be heard. I’m very happy the people are going to be able to share this experience in a way that’s so true to our original intent.”

+ The album’s release has been preceded by broad acceptance of its first track, “My Sweet Love” that includes back-up vocals by Karen Fairchild of the hit country music vocal group Little Big Town. Upon its debut, it was the number one most added song at both the AAA and Americana radio formats and has entered the Top 20 in both within three weeks.

* Visit his page to hear some of his new songs.

Carly Simon: estupenda at any age

+Hear Music, the label of so expensive coffees Starbucks, announced some time ago that it has signed renowned singer-songwriter Carly Simon to release This Kind of Love, her highly anticipated first album of all-original songs in eight years. She joins the elite roster of Hear Music artists that includes Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. The album will be released at Starbucks Company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada as well as traditional music retail on April 29, 2008.

+ This Kind of Love ranks among Simon’s most personal albums as well as one of her most stylistically diverse excursions with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to driving rhythms. The CD is co-produced by Simon, Frank Filipetti and Jimmy Webb who also wrote or co-wrote most of the arrangements. Filipetti worked his talent as the engineer as well as producer. The three first teamed up for Film Noir, Simon’s album of standards that Webb produced in 1997.

+ The musical inspiration of the CD comes from Simon’s fascination with Brazilian music, whose rhythms are subtly infused throughout. Even though she grew up listening to such classic artists as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa, it was Simon’s recent discovery of modern-day Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben that made her realize “you don’t have to be singing bossa nova or samba to get the essence [of Brazilian music]. There are songs that fit no one rhythm or generic type or song progression.”

+ Visit her space or her web page to hear these wonderful songs.

+ And listen to one of them from here:
* Hold out your heart (qtl or asx).

19 April, 2008

+ 17 songs! Impressive number. Bah, just imagine 17 symphonic rock songs, each one with its unavoidable guitar and drums solo. Whatever, do not lose your number.

+ If you are seventeen, this is your record. 'Cos I am much more than that, I do not understand yet why I love these 17 songs!

+ You can try to see if you like them by visiting their space, you will never tell they are great, but you know you should!, you can try to explain why you like the wonderful record under the radar, but you know you should buy all the records they have!

* You can even critizice them for their updated version (thanks guys) of the wizard of oz, somewhere over the rainbow, but you know that you were already very worried for always listening to that good old version (Judy Garland).

* You should say, The Goldbergs, where were you all my life?

Danny Federici, RIP

+ It looks like the New Jersey coast is brilliant sometimes, melancholic other times. I guess the paperwriter was trying to say that the man was brilliant!.

+ Melancholic, throw the first stone!

+ Danny, you played great, you were a great friend, we will remember you!

* Listen to the man (piano, alright) while Bruce sings here.

It's a shame about Ray reissued! includes a DVD!

+ The Lemonheads' second album for Atlantic Records was an unforgettable gem. Powered by infectious melodic hooks and a mix of sweet and subversive lyrics, IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY helped put the band on the map in 1992. Now, Rhino honors the album with the label's special Collector's Edition treatment, remastering and expanding the original for a CD/DVD set that includes unreleased demos along with the DVD debut of the 1993 video Two Weeks In Australia.

+ The album features the trio -- Evan Dando (guitar, vocals), David Ryan (drums) and Juliana Hatfield (bass, backing vocals) -- breezing through 13 songs in just under 30 minutes, including the title track, "My Drug Buddy," "The Turnpike Down" and a romping cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic "Mrs. Robinson. The 10 bonus tracks feature "Shaky Ground," which was originally released as the B-side to "My Drug Buddy." The remaining nine songs are unreleased demos that Dando recorded in 1991, including early renditions of album tracks "Confetti," "Rockin Stroll" and "Hannah & Gabi," plus "Bit Part," which includes vocals from Hatfield.

+ The DVD contains 45 minutes of videos and live performances that were previously released only on VHS as Two Weeks In Australia. The disc features videos for several songs from IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY, including the title track, the breakout single "Mrs. Robinson," "My Drug Buddy" and more. Also included is a video for "Being Around," a song that would appear a year later on the follow-up to RAY and "Half The Time" from the Lemonheads' Atlantic debut, Lovey. A trio of live performances include "Alison's Starting To Happen," "Ride With Me" from Lovey and "It's About Time" from 1993's Come On Feel The Lemonheads. The DVD also features candid commentary by Dando recalling the band's wild Australian antics.

It's not simple but Van just does it simple!

+ The man in the picture is serious, reflexive, it could serve as a roman emperor in an epic movie about the Roman empire. In its bourgeoning era, of course. Or the king of the spanish empire round sixteen century. Or just a blues singer. Great photo and cover!

+ Keep It Simple is Morrison’s first album of new material in two years. The man itself explain what will you find there:

“People don’t remember what you did, or what happened, or how you got here,” he says. “I didn’t get here the easy way. It’s people who don’t know me. They don’t actually look at what this guy’s actually been through. They see the big versions of what’s supposed to be me – but they don’t know my biography really. That’s what this whole record’s about.”

+ Ok, great music is what you find in any Van Morrison job. Keep it simple is no exception. Two superb blues pieces just as a start (how can a poor boy, school of hard knocks), rest (what a rest), another blues (don't go to clubs anymore), soul (lover come back), northern irish paintings, and much more, all with emotion and depth.

* You can get a good glimpse of the record by visiting his space.

* You can also listen to and watch soul.

* There is another player at the Lost Highway Records web.

* And, here, you can get a stream of “That’s Entertainment”.

The Meadows: California grass' n pop

+ These two guys, Todd Herfindal and Kevin Houlihan, The Meadows know how to make perfect briliant songs. Their songs have a unique mix of brit-pop and americana, all covered with a light layer of America (ventura highway).

+ Please, visit their space and listen to their work. It is worth it.

Fountains of Wayne kicks off in Murcia

+ Last night, local radio DJ and now programmer of the Villegas Auditorio in Murcia, Angel H. Sopena, was happy enough to see that his excellent work resulted in success, both artistic and economic, probably also. His debut was not anything.

+ Pop rock band from New York, Fountains of Wayne, gave an energetic show to an enthusiastic audience who sang, shouted and danced all the songs the band played. Although the show was named to present their last record, the excellent "Traffic and Weather", already commented here, the guys also played some of their hits, including radiation vive, stacy's mom, or sink to the bottom.

+ The sound was alright but not impressive. Maybe some more watts could be added to the concert hall (also, the organizers should bring enough beer barrels instead of using litronas and tercios, ji, ji).

+ The guys are on tour, so check out their space to be able to see and hear FoW. If you like pop, pop-rock, alt-rock, power pop, you can't miss them.

+ As usual, listen to the guys from here:

* Hey Julie. * Maureen. * Mexican wine. * Sink to the bottom. * I-95.

+ Or, watch FoW videos from here:

* Hey Julie. * Stacy's mom. * Mexican wine. * Radiation vibe. * Someone to love (live).

+ One of these nights, you might find someone to love!, be careful.
